A research overview needs to distinguish treatment of major depressive disorder from reductions in depressive symptoms measured during treatment for another condition. It also needs to identify whether EMDR was provided alone or added to other care. ===== The 2021 meta-analysis ===== Yan and colleagues reviewed eight randomised studies involving 320 adults with major depressive disorder. They analysed comparisons with conditions categorised as 'No Intervention' and with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). The review reported advantages for EMDR on depressive symptom scores, while rating the certainty of that evidence as low. ((Yan, S., et al. (2021). The Effectiveness of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Toward Adults With Major Depressive Disorder: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials. Frontiers in Psychiatry, 12, 700458. Read source.)) The remission findings were less secure and were rated very low certainty. The comparison with 'No Intervention' did not show a statistically significant remission advantage. The CBT comparison favoured EMDR in the included studies, but the authors emphasised small samples and low trial quality. It would therefore be misleading to turn the result into a general claim that EMDR is superior to CBT for depression. ===== Outcomes and comparison conditions ===== Symptom reduction and remission answer different questions. A lower average questionnaire score is not the same as a person no longer meeting a prespecified threshold or diagnostic definition. Longer-term relapse, functioning and quality of life add further questions that cannot be answered by an immediate symptom score alone. The actual comparator also matters. A label such as 'No Intervention' should be read against the trial's methods, including any background care. Where EMDR is added to usual treatment, the comparison estimates the additional contribution of that package rather than EMDR as the sole treatment. ===== Wider literature ===== Scelles and Bulnes' 2021 systematic review examined EMDR beyond PTSD across multiple conditions and study designs. It helps place depression research within the wider literature, but broad coverage does not remove the limitations of individual studies. Evidence for one disorder or population cannot be assumed to establish benefit for another. ((Scelles, C., & Bulnes, L. C. (2021). EMDR as Treatment Option for Conditions Other Than PTSD: A Systematic Review. Frontiers in Psychology, 12, 644369. Read source.)) The Adaptive Information Processing model provides a rationale for attending to adverse experiences that may be relevant to depression. That rationale does not imply that every depressive episode has a single traumatic cause, or establish that memory processing is the most appropriate treatment for every person. ((Hase, M., Balmaceda, U. M., Ostacoli, L., Liebermann, P., & Hofmann, A. (2017). The AIP Model of EMDR Therapy and Pathogenic Memories. Frontiers in Psychology, 8, 1578. Read source.)) ===== Relevance to IEMT ===== These are EMDR studies. They do not establish efficacy for IEMT or EMI in major depressive disorder. In particular, reduced distress during recall of a negative memory in a general-population experiment should not be described as remission from depression. The downloaded sources support a cautiously favourable but qualified account of the EMDR depression literature. This page summarises those sources rather than claiming to be an exhaustive review of every study published after their search dates. ===== See also ===== * Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) * Adaptive Information Processing Model * Measuring Change: Distress, Vividness and Emotionality * Research Evidence for IEMT Last modified: 2026/10/06 19:59by andrewtaustin Log In
